La derni\u00e8re \u00e9tape de notre voyage en Europe \u00e9tait Southampton, au Royaume-Uni. C'est de Southampton que part le Queen Mary II, notre bateau de retour aux \u00c9tats-Unis, pour la travers\u00e9e de l'Atlantique. Notre derni\u00e8re visite remonte \u00e0 la mi-janvier et le froid, la pluie et l'\u00e9puisement d\u00fb \u00e0 notre travers\u00e9e NYC > UK nous ont emp\u00each\u00e9s de faire beaucoup d'exploration pendant ce voyage.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Notre premier arr\u00eat apr\u00e8s l'enregistrement a \u00e9t\u00e9 un go\u00fbt authentique de l'hospitalit\u00e9 britannique au Canute Pub, \u00e0 quelques pas de notre h\u00f4tel. Nous avions envie d'une ambiance de pub authentique et nous avons \u00e9t\u00e9 ravis de constater que nos amis \u00e0 fourrure \u00e9taient les bienvenus - avec leur propre bol d'eau ! Je me suis laiss\u00e9 tenter par ce qui pourrait bien \u00eatre le meilleur fish and chips de ma vie, tandis que Daniel s'est r\u00e9gal\u00e9 de bangers and mash. C'\u00e9tait le parfait premier repas au Royaume-Uni, alliant une nourriture copieuse \u00e0 un service chaleureux et terre-\u00e0-terre.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nous sommes arriv\u00e9s \u00e0 Southampton avec beaucoup de temps pour explorer avant de monter \u00e0 bord du Queen Mary II. La ville nous a accueillis avec un m\u00e9lange vibrant d'effervescence moderne et de charme historique. En nous promenant sur High Street, nous avons plong\u00e9 dans la sc\u00e8ne locale aux march\u00e9s de Bargate. Au milieu d'une architecture m\u00e9di\u00e9vale et d'une histoire impr\u00e9gn\u00e9e d'histoires d'anciennes portes, les \u00e9tals anim\u00e9s du march\u00e9 proposaient de tout, des produits frais aux articles en cuir faits \u00e0 la main. L'atmosph\u00e8re du march\u00e9 \u00e9tait un m\u00e9lange \u00e9clectique d'ancien et de nouveau, \u00e0 l'image de la ville elle-m\u00eame.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nos p\u00e9r\u00e9grinations nous ont conduits devant des sites remarquables tels que l'\u00e9glise Holyrood, un vestige r\u00e9sistant du pass\u00e9 profond de Southampton. Malgr\u00e9 les cicatrices de la guerre, sa structure durable t\u00e9moigne tranquillement de l'histoire stratifi\u00e9e de la ville. Parall\u00e8lement \u00e0 ces excursions historiques, nous avons \u00e9t\u00e9 immerg\u00e9s dans la vie locale contemporaine : d'un festival improvis\u00e9 \u00e0 Hoglands Park proposant d'app\u00e9tissantes friandises d'inspiration arabe \u00e0 une soir\u00e9e tranquille \u00e0 d\u00eener dans les patios des restaurants anim\u00e9s d'Oxford Street, y compris un repas m\u00e9morable au Grape House. Son m\u00e9lange d'ambiance cosmopolite moderne et de liens maritimes historiques en a fait une exp\u00e9rience gastronomique unique.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pour une tranche de calme quotidien, nos promenades r\u00e9guli\u00e8res avec les chiens nous ont conduits \u00e0 Queens Park, un charmant havre de verdure situ\u00e9 juste \u00e0 l'ext\u00e9rieur de notre h\u00f4tel. Ce charmant parc, bord\u00e9 de majestueux platanes de Londres et parsem\u00e9 de monuments comm\u00e9moratifs attentionn\u00e9s, nous a offert une retraite paisible. Il est facile d'imaginer les familles et les visiteurs des g\u00e9n\u00e9rations pass\u00e9es profiter de la m\u00eame atmosph\u00e8re sereine, tandis que le parc t\u00e9moigne tranquillement de l'\u00e9volution de l'histoire de Southampton.<\/span><\/p>\n

Southampton n'est pas une ville portuaire comme les autres. Autrefois point de d\u00e9part du malheureux RMS Titanic et aujourd'hui rampe de lancement du Queen Mary II, son h\u00e9ritage maritime est plus vivant que jamais. Avec des m\u00e9moriaux en l'honneur des ing\u00e9nieurs du Titanic et des clins d'\u0153il \u00e0 des l\u00e9gendes litt\u00e9raires comme Jane Austen, dont les liens locaux ont ajout\u00e9 une touche de romantisme et d'intrigue au r\u00e9cit de la ville, chaque coin de Southampton murmure des histoires d'antan - m\u00eame si la vie moderne bourdonne autour d'elle.<\/span><\/p>\n

Le timing \u00e9tait impeccable : \u00e9tant au Royaume-Uni pendant le solstice d'\u00e9t\u00e9, une excursion d'une journ\u00e9e \u00e0 Avebury \u00e9tait tout simplement immanquable. Nous avions envisag\u00e9 de visiter Stonehenge, mais les restrictions (et l'incapacit\u00e9 de nos chiens \u00e0 participer) nous ont incit\u00e9s \u00e0 nous rendre \u00e0 Avebury. En parcourant les anciens cercles de pierres, nous nous sommes \u00e9merveill\u00e9s devant les vastes collines ondulantes qui constituaient une toile de fond \u00e9poustouflante. Le pub local, avec son fish and chips qui a peut-\u00eatre battu un record (je discute encore de ce point), \u00e9tait l'endroit id\u00e9al pour s'arr\u00eater. L'un des moments forts de la journ\u00e9e a \u00e9t\u00e9 de partager une table avec Andy, un habitant de la r\u00e9gion qui nous a permis de garder le moral avec ses histoires d\u00e9licieuses et son rire contagieux.<\/span><\/p>\n

Notre journ\u00e9e \u00e0 Avebury offrait plus qu'une beaut\u00e9 naturelle ; c'\u00e9tait une plong\u00e9e dans les profondeurs du pass\u00e9 pr\u00e9historique de la Grande-Bretagne. L'immense henge et les multiples cercles de pierres du site \u00e9voquent les rituels et les c\u00e9r\u00e9monies du nouvel \u00e2ge de pierre, et malgr\u00e9 le passage des mill\u00e9naires, l'atmosph\u00e8re reste \u00e0 la fois mystique et invitante. G\u00e9r\u00e9 par le National Trust et c\u00e9l\u00e9br\u00e9 comme un site du patrimoine mondial, Avebury continue d'inspirer un sentiment d'\u00e9merveillement et de connexion avec notre pass\u00e9 ancien.<\/span><\/p>\n

Notre aventure au Royaume-Uni a \u00e9t\u00e9 une d\u00e9licieuse mosa\u00efque de plaisirs culinaires, d'explorations historiques et de rencontres inattendues. Qu'il s'agisse de savourer les classiques des pubs, d'errer parmi les pierres anciennes ou simplement de se promener tranquillement dans un parc s\u00e9culaire, chaque moment \u00e9tait impr\u00e9gn\u00e9 d'un sens de la d\u00e9couverte et de l'humour doux de la vie sur la route. Nous sommes rentr\u00e9s chez nous non seulement avec des souvenirs et des clich\u00e9s, mais aussi avec des souvenirs qui inspireront certainement de nombreuses autres explorations \u00e0 venir.<\/span><\/p>\n
